What you need to know: Madagascar’s Food Shortage

Madagascar is an island off of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar has been notorious for its high poverty rates over the years along with low per capita income. Effects of poverty are detrimental to society on their own, and they have proved to only increase when coupled with climate change.

Climate change has been a prevalent topic in the recent decade, and places like Madagascar are starting to experience the consequences of it. Due to increasing temperatures, Madagascar has been faced with extreme heat and therefore a drought. This drought has immensely impacted the farming and food production of the island. Without water, crops cannot grow, and people cannot get fed.

Out of desperation, the people of Madagascar have started consuming locusts (insects) and cacti. This diet is common amongst communities in the country, including children. Due to its lack of infrastructure, the country is going to and will struggle to pull itself out of this crisis, unless there is heavy rain or donations of materials and food.
