Project “The Great American Rail-Trail'' led by the Rail-to-Trails Conservancy, has raised over $4 million in funds. The trail, which will extend from Washington DC to the Pacific coast, covers more than 3,728 miles and will pass through 12 states. The trail will connect over 145 pre existing paths and is a key tool for transportation and recreation, especially during the pandemic, and in the post-pandemic world.
The project launched in May 2019 and has already completed more than 1,988 miles. In addition to recreation, the path is also an effort to reduce CO2 emissions. By making cities more bike friendly, urban planners hope to reduce the need for cars and pollutant-emitting transportation.
Countries around the world including Belgium, England, France, China, and more are implementing similar projects to help curb post-pandemic pollutant levels.
