The Champs-Elysees in the French capital is prepared to be given around a 250 million dollar ‘green makeover,’ announced by Anne Hidalgo, current mayor of Paris, France. Mayor Hidalgo publicized to the local French newspaper, Le Journal du Dumanche that the 1.2 mile long road will be constructed into ‘an extraordinary garden.’
The Champs-Elysees committee which contains those who live and work relatively close to, or on the avenue itself, have decided something needs to be done after stating that the “Champs-Elysees is often called the world's most beautiful avenue, but those of us who work here every day are not at all sure about that.” This world famous avenue has been struck with multiple economical and health setbacks including the gilet jaunes, a movement started in 2018 regarding economic justice. After experiencing more setbacks including being continuously abandoned by the Parisians, the committee was thrilled by Mayor Hidalgo’s announcement.
The Champs-Elysees was last renovated over 25 years ago, and with the avenue being on display for the annual Bastille Day parade and also the grand finisher for Tour de France, it is well due for an update. In an attempt to pedestrianise the city of Paris for the purpose of fixing the recent abandonment by the Parisians, Anne Hidalgo has made changes to seven of the city’s major squares so that pedestrians will have more space. Mayor Hidalgo’s intentions being that more pedestrians in the area will create more support shown towards the upcoming renovations. As the ‘green makeover’ is beginning now, Hidalgo’s hope is that it will be successfully completed by the year 2030, meaning it will not be complete when France hosts the Olympics in the year 2024.
