Operation Santa
US Postal Service's letter campaign commences for the 108th year, but has now adapted to the worldwide pandemic by continuing the tradition digitally. The “Operation Santa” event allows children to write letters to Santa in the North Pole. After, their letters are processed and published online for people to adopt them (buying the gifts specified in their letters), making their wishes come true.
The digital experience started in 2017 in New York City but has been further developed, now ready for success in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. Over hundreds of thousands of letters are sent to the special address in the North Pole and more than 11,000 packages were sent to families just last year.
The pandemic has caused families around the world to suffer as loved ones pass away from Covid-19, economic stability begins to crumble, and family holidays are canceled. Over 3.6 million Americans have been unemployed for more than half a year and the number of cases has reached almost 12 million in the United States. The beginnings of the holiday season start to spark the feelings of giving and kindness, which are now needed more than ever. Kim Frum, a spokesperson for USPS, says “being able to provide even the tiniest bit of normalcy or spark of happiness to those in need would mean the world to so many people right now."
Make wishes come true.
So starting December 4, people can start adopting letters here. Receiving or giving a small gift during the holidays may be seen as a small action, but its effect is certainly bigger. Make someone’s holidays better!
