Updated: Nov 22, 2020

The Man Behind it All

At just 7 years old, Kushal Konwar Sarma found his love for elephants after riding a family elephant around his village. He spent the following years devoting his time to making connections and understanding the elephants. Eventually, the elephants started to familiarize themselves with Sarma and become comfortable around him. This has served as an advantage to him because he can now effectively communicate with the elephants through signs. According to BBC News, Sarma has been able to assist over 10,000 elephants in his lifetime, and he continues to help more as time continues.

The Need for Help

The habitats of the elephants often encounter floods, causing immense destruction and devastation. It is typical for the elephants to get carried away in the floods, and that causes them to become separated from one another. In an attempt to diffuse the overwhelming situation, Sarma provides his services to the elephants. The dedicated veterinarian prioritizes the elephants’ wellbeing and consistently supports the ones in need. Many are not surprised by the fact that he was presented the Padma Shri, the 4th highest civilian honor in India. Even though his job comes with a plethora of risks, he is still willing to sacrifice himself in order to improve the quality of life for the elephants. The world could definitely use more people like Kushal Konwar Sarma!
